In the island group located in the Southern region of Cook Islands is Manuae - an uninhabited atoll 100 kilometres south-east of Aitutaki. There are two horseshoe-shaped islets, Manuae and Te Au O Tu with a total area of 6 square kilometres on opposite sides of a shallow lagoon about 4 km x 7 km, and subject to large shifting sand banks. The highest point on the island is only 5 metres above sea level. Manuae sits on the peak of a submerged volcano which descends 4000 metres to the ocean bed.
