Palmerston is an atoll with a total land area of about one square mile (2.6 sq km). It lies lies approx. 310 miles (500 km) north-west of Rarotonga, and is the only true atoll in the southern Cooks group. The very large lagoon is about seven miles (11 km) in diameter, and surrounded by six sandy 'motu' (islets) totalling 3600 acres (1457 hectares) in area. The highest point is a sandhill of 20 feet (6 m), referred to as 'The Mountain'! Palmerston, like many of the atolls and islands in Cook Islands, was discovered by Captain Cook in the late 18th century.
Cook named the island in honor of the First Lord of the Admiralty, Lord Palmerston. The 50 or so inhabitants are all descendants of 19th Century British explorer William Marsters and his Polynesian wives, who settled there in the 19th century.
There is no airport or air service to the atoll.
