ABOUT COOK ISLANDS - POLITICS

There is a democratic government based on party politics. The 25 members of parliament choose the Prime Minister from among the elected representatives, who are appointed for five years.

The Head of State is the Queen of England, who appoints a representative on the recommendation of the Prime Minister.

There is also a House of Ariki that comprises 14 hereditary chiefs. It is a forum for consultation and advice to the government, particularly on traditional matters.
